An Exposure Architecture, Not a Productivity Tool

For highly sensitive client data, cloud-based AI is not merely another software tool. It is an exposure architecture. This conclusion rests on three stacked propositions.

Proposition I

Not a Vault

Cloud AI is an active black-box processor that ingests, transforms, embeds, ranks, and generates from client information. A vault stores. A black box processes.

Proposition II

One-Way Harms

Once confidential information leaks, the damage is often irreversible. Privilege cannot be un-waived. A disclosed secret cannot be recalled.

Proposition III

Safer Alternatives Exist

A safer local architecture exists. The choice to route crown-jewel client data through third-party cloud inference is a professional choice, not an unavoidable modern inconvenience.

The issue is not generic cloud computing. The issue is not ordinary file hosting. The issue is that cloud-based AI systems actively process highly sensitive client information inside opaque computational environments that lawyers do not control, cannot fully inspect, and often cannot meaningfully explain.

While This Paper Addresses Cloud AI Risk, LexisNexis Provided a Live Demonstration

In late February, hackers claimed to have breached LexisNexis AWS infrastructure and exfiltrated approximately 2 GB of data, reportedly including records for federal judges, DOJ attorneys, SEC staff, and over 21,000 enterprise customers.

This is the cloud legal AI platform the profession already trusts. The one firms point to when they say "we already use the cloud."

The attackers claimed 400,000 user profiles, 300,000 contract records, and complete infrastructure maps. Reporting indicates the attack came through the application layer. Traditional security controls did not prevent it. LexisNexis stated that the affected data resided on servers containing legacy, deprecated information from before 2020, and that current production systems were not compromised.

This is a training-data problem. These models learned from an internet full of cloud-vendor marketing. A paper arguing cloud AI is a structural liability is a minority position in the corpus. The default prior is "cloud is fine with safeguards." The model resists the thesis reflexively, not consciously.
